Skin Prep
Preparing and Maintaining Your Airbrush Tan
- All waxing, sugaring, manicure and pedicure services should be done at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment.
- Take a shower and exfoliate using an oil-free scrub and/or scrub mitt/gloves the evening prior to your appointment. Be sure to focus on areas that tend to be dry such as hands, feet, elbows and knees. It is imperative to remove product buildup, body oils and dead skin cells in order to allow the DHA in the spray tan to react with the amino acids in your skin. The spray tan will not develop 100% if any barriers are on the skin.
- Please avoid any bar soaps, Dove, Olay and Panteen products before and after tanning. These products tend to create a barrier on the skin.
- Please do not shower right before your appointment as the heat/steam can adversely affect your tan. The solution can also settle in your pores and cause a black freckled look. If you must shower the day of your tan, be sure to do so a minimum of 4 hours before your appointment. Shower only with cool water and avoid using any soap, shaving cream or exfoliant products.
- Please do not apply any lotion, oils, perfume, make-up or deodorant.
- Female clients may tan in a bathing suit, undergarment or nude. Male clients must wear an undergarment/bathing suit. Whatever you decide to wear will get solution on it so make sure it is dark.
- Want a crisp tan line? Plan on wearing a solid bottom instead of a lace undie. The spray will penetrate through the lighter areas of lace and cause a leopard, uneven looking tan line.
- Please be on time and have all of your tanning prep completed prior to your appointment time.
- LUXE absolutely loves kiddos but please refrain from bringing children with you to your studio appointment. We are enclosed in a fairly small room and the solutions that are being applied to your skin and floating in the air are chemicals…no matter how you look at it. Even though they contain natural ingredients, the chemicals are not meant to be inhaled, hence why nose plugs and eye wear are offered to clients at each appointment. Unfortunately, little ones can’t be left unattended in the waiting area either. Just looking out for the safety of your little ones.
- Wear dark and loose fitting clothing and loose flip-flops. No jeans, tight fitting clothes, sports bras, socks or running shoes until after your first rinse. Rainy day? Make sure to wear a jacket with a hood, loose pants, an umbrella and shoes that cover your feet but aren’t tight.
- Do not get wet in any way BEFORE your first rinse. Avoid the following right after being sprayed: rain, washing your hands and face, working out, any water activities, perspiring, and skin on skin contact such as crossing your legs. These activities are fine after your first rinse.
- Do not worry if you notice dark areas around the creases of your neck, underarms elbows and knees. Please do not rub because these are just the initial bronzers that will blend in completely after showering.
- Also, do not worry if your underarms or neck have a green tint to them. This is just the DHA in the solution reacting with any deodorant or sweat that was left on your body. The green tint will wash away after your first rinse.
- If you have been sprayed with a Rapid solution, please follow the 2-6 hour rinse instructions for your desired degree of darkness. Don’t panic when it seems you have little color after your first rinse. This particular tan continues to develop for up to 24 hours. Please DO NOT use any type of body wash or moisturizer until 24 hours after your initial rinse.
- Please follow the recommended wait times before your first rinse. Your tan will continue to develop over the next 24 hours so please do not use any type of body wash or moisturizer until 24 hours after your initial rinse. Using body products too soon can potentially change the outcome of your tan. Do not be alarmed when you see the cosmetic bronzer washing off. This is normal and does not affect your tan.
- Once the tan has fully developed (24 hours), you can begin using a body wash that does not contain sulfates (SLS or SLES), mineral oil or petroleum (avoid bar soaps, Dove, Dial, Olay, Bath & Body, Victoria Secret, etc.). This is important because using products that are not pH balanced could result in a lighter tan that does not last (acidic skin) or a tan that turns golden or orange (alkaline skin). If you need assistance in selected products, LUXE offers pH balanced body washes and moisturizers made specifically for spray tans. While in the shower, avoid scrubbing and when toweling off pat dry instead of rubbing.
- Use a sharp, new razor when shaving. We recommend using a good quality hair conditioner in place of shaving cream.
- Massages, manicures and pedicures must be avoided. Products used during services will break down your tan.
- Avoid long hot showers, baths and hot tubs because hot water and prolonged water submersion will break down your tan.
- Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! It is imperative that you moisturize with a spray tan friendly lotion (non petroleum based) at least two times daily. This will slow down your skin’s natural cell turnover and will ensure an even, flawless fade.
- It is recommended that you wear sunscreen when outdoors because spray tans do not provide protection. The lotion versions of Coola and Sun Bum are two brands of sunscreen that are safe for spray tans.
- Airbrush tans can last anywhere from 5-10 days depending on your skin type and how diligently you follow the Pre and Post Tan Care recommendations.
